Robberg Vlei print of a painting. This is a limited-run (Series 2) print of a 400x295mm oil and acrylic (on canvas) painting that was created in 2022 by Jane Pitchford in Plettenberg Bay. Printed on archival art paper, signed, and numbered.
This incredible vlei is full of life, all sorts of creatures and birds. I feel so privileged to have access to a slice of wild paradise every time I go there. It’s such a blessing that it’s difficult for people to access the reeds and the bank on the other side so it remains mostly untouched, but I still dream of being able to explore the mysterious bush and caves that are out of reach. It was fascinating looking into what to call this painting, it is known as Solar Beach Vlei / Robberg Vlei / Brakkloof Farm but I decided to call it Robberg Vlei because that is the name that the birders in Plettenberg Bay use. I lived in Zeekoevlei, Cape Town growing up and there’s something very special about the wildlife around a vlei. (I think vlei means marsh in English). I am told that the Brakkloof farmers closed the (Robberg) dunes to make the vlei a place for their cattle to drink brakish water. Early on, I decided to make the sky above the hill look like the sea in place of the actual sky and clouds (I don’t know why) – It seems appropriate now that I know the Brakkloof story, to have the sea back in this space, even if it’s only in a painting.
