Description
This piece is the partner to the ‘Give it Horns’ piece of the same size that I painted in 2018. It is acrylic on paper and approximately 35cm tall. This one is called ‘I’m human, innit!’
It took a while to come up with the concept for this one and it kept changing until I settled on this composition. As with the other painting I find it quite hard to articulate exactly what it all means, it’s more about a feeling, the feeling from him is a very ‘now’ feeling, I hope that makes sense.
The bird represents old feelings and ideas that are flying away and behind him. The bird is a Southern Carmine Bee-Eater. The buck is a Springbok which is a symbol of South Africa and embodies virility, leadership, and regeneration. His feet are in the plants, our roots are in nature and we need to keep that connection to survive.
The lily, specifically a symbol of purity and innocence – the hope is that we return there, to the beauty of it all.
The name comes from my favourite Grime artist, Stormzy. He was explaining his rise to fame and how things are changing around him but at the end of the day, he is still a human and never to forget the basics of that. A totally different world but very true and appropriate.
